Placement Testing
Placement testing is now mandatory for all new curriculum students unless exempt by a waiver. Please view the policy, here.
Placement testing provides an accurate and timely assessment of a student’s academic proficiency levels which help determine the most appropriate courses in English, reading, and math. Therefore, it's very important you do the best you can.
Central Piedmont Community College administers ACCUPLACER, an online, Computerized Placement Test (CPT). Each placement test section is untimed, allowing you to relax, concentrate, and take as much time as you need. Rest and preparation are two of the most important things you can do to improve your scores. We highly recommend you test when you are well-rested, and only after a thorough review of the practice tests and review videos, found here. Permission to retest is not automatic. Please review our retest policy prior to testing. If you are not feeling well on the day of your testing appointment, you should reschedule. We Want You To Be Successful!
ACCUPLACER contains three assessments (Math, Reading, and English), and usually takes between two to three hours to complete. A fourth assessment, College-Level Math, may be required depending on your math score. Calculators and dictionaries are not allowed during the placement tests. The Testing & Assessment Center provides pencils and scratch paper. Upon completion of the placement tests, students will attend their advising appointment which was made during orientation.

A valid photo ID is required for testing (CPCC student ID, driver's license, military ID, or passport).
**In some cases, mathematical symbols may differ from country to country. Please note that the mathematical symbols used on the ACCUPLACER placement tests conform to symbols used in North America.**

*If taking a retest (select retest policy on left column), retest fee MUST be paid in advance and receipt must be brought to Testing Center on day of retest. Cashier's Office is not available on Saturday.
CPCC now accepts ASSET and COMPASS placement scores. If you have taken ACCUPLACER, ASSET or COMPASS at another school, have an official copy of your scores mailed or faxed to CPCC, C/O: Matt Bruining, Director. Scores must be sent from the educational institution where test was taken.
