Lateral Entry Teaching Program
This program is designed for full-time, working, lateral entry teachers. Lateral entry teachers hold at least a bachelor's degree and have been hired to teach by a school district with the provision that they achieve licensure requirements within three years.
There are 9 competencies that that State Board of Education requires to obtain your licensure. CPCC offers 6 of these competencies, and our University Partners, UNCC and Pfeiffer University offer the other 3.
This program is approved to meet the needs of Lateral Entry Teachers in the State of North Carolina.
To participate you will need a transcript evaluation from the RALC, a division of the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI) which licenses all teachers in North Carolina.
A signed teaching contract for a full-time teaching position in your licensure area or a letter from your principal stating you are a full-time lateral entry teacher in your licensure area.

SUMMER 2008 COURSES:
EDU 163L - Classroom Management and Instruction
This is an online course with field assignments in your classroom. If you are not currently teaching, you'll need to complete some clinical field experiences to go along with your online learning.
EDU 271L Educational Technology
This course introduces the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning in all educational settings. Topics include technology concepts, instructional strategies, materials and adaptive technology for children with exceptionalities, facilitation of assessment/evaluation, and ethical issues surrounding the use of technology. Upon completion, students should be able to apply technology enhanced instructional strategies, use a variety
of technology resources and demonstrate appropriate technology skills in educational environments.
EDU243L LearningTheory
This course provides lateral entry teachers an introduction to learning theory, various styles of learning, and motivational factors involved in the learning process. Emphasis is placed on the development of cognitive skills using the eight types of intelligence and applying these to practical classroom situations. Upon completion, students should be able to describe theories and styles of learning and discuss the relationship between different types of intelligence to learning motivation.
EDU 244L – Human Growth and Development
This course introduces lateral entry teachers to theories, ages, and stages related to human growth and development from birth through adolescence. Emphasis will be placed on development through the stages of a child’s life in the areas of physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and moral development. These stages will be examined in the context of a child’s development within their school, family, and community. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and describe milestones of each stage in all areas of development and discuss factors that influence growth.
Prerequisites – Evaluation and plan from the RALC, or local University, as well as proof of current employment in a school.
