Services: Volunteers that can only commit to a certain amount of time, not ongoing time, can do various grounds/maintenance, administrative, and special projects. CRC is located on 57 acres in a nature preserve, with many cages, and something is always needed to be fixed, trimmed, weeded, hacked back, etc. Also CRC needs people who are handy with power tools and can help fix/make perches, do general cage repair, etc. Please go to the Website for more information about the regular volunteer program.

Birthday Blessings
Purpose of Agency: All children deserve to experience the simple joys of their youth. But sadly, many are missing out. For homeless children, joyous occasions such as birthday parties often go neglected; an unfortunate result of a family’s financial strain and unstable living conditions. The purpose of Birthday Blessings is to help recognize and celebrate the lives of homeless children by providing birthday parties that bring attention and cheer to kids who are in the midst of the most unstable times in their lives. Birthday Blessings has three primary goals for the children it serves:

Guardian ad Litem
Purpose of Agency: Every five minutes a child is abused or neglected in North Carolina. In Mecklenburg county around 15,700 children are thrust into the court system through no fault of their own. Some are victims of violence, psychological torment or sexual abuse. Others have been neglected or even abandoned by their own parents. Most of them are confused and all of them are frightened. Although the numbers are staggering, the Guardian ad Litem program provides an opportunity for people to make a difference. You serve as a trained advocate in court by getting to know the child and the child’s case and by preparing a written report to help the judge understand what is best for the child and to ultimately find them a safe, permanent home.

Services: Everyday, Guardian ad Litem volunteers throughout Mecklenburg County help children replace their world of fear with one of hope. But there is a great need for more volunteers. There are currently close to 500 children awaiting a guardian. You can be the voice for an abused child. Students volunteering with our organization can serve as Guardians to abused and neglected children by advocating for their best interest in court. Students will work to learn about their child and their child’s case by meeting with them and visiting their home and speaking with social workers and teachers to try to determine what would be best for a positive outcome.

Services: We are looking for volunteer mentors who have a desire to impact the lives of youth through a Christ-centered program. Mentors use tutoring as a way to build a relationship with their mentee. Volunteer mentors commit to serving one hour per week for a semester. They meet with their mentee from 5-6 on their chosen day each week at an FHL after school site.
Student Requirements: Prospective mentors must fill out a Volunteer Participation Form (which includes the Child Protection Policy) online. The application process includes character references, a background check, and an orientation session. There is also mentor training and fellowship opportunities throughout the year which are strongly encouraged.

Citizen School at Albemarle Road Middle School

Services: Our chapter provides programs and services to people living with MS in all of South Carolina and 33 counties in Western North Carolina. Our fundraising is to fund MS research and provide the programs and services to people living with MS.
Charlotte Walk – March 29, 2008 – Students can volunteer at the event or form a team and walk in the event. I know they have another commitment for this day, but it will be close to the same time next year too.
MS Challenge Walk - Held near Beaufort SC, April 25-27, 2008. This is a 50 mile walk to raise money and awareness for MS. Students can serve as Crew and volunteer for the weekend and help with rest stops, set-up, etc. We could possibly use physical therapy students to help with stretching at the rest stops. If students want to volunteer for just a day or a shift, that is possible too. I would suggest going to our website to see the list of volunteer opportunities. This event will be held closer to Charlotte in 2009.
MS Bike Event – September 27-28. I will have more details on this later. This is a 150 mile bike event. Close to 2,000 participants and we need lots of volunteers. Very fun, fast-paced event. I will provide more details within the next two weeks.
MS Service Day – is an annual event. I know you can’t help this year, so I will provide you with dates for next year as soon as I receive them. It will be in the Spring again.
Student Requirements: If the students are participating or volunteering for an event, they can register on-line. If they come to the office to help us here, I will provide them with a volunteer application and a volunteer orientation. Should only take an hour.

Citizen School at Albemarle Road Middle School
Purpose of Agency: To provide quality after school programming to students in a highly-structured, academically-based programs with the end goal that most or all of our students will raise their grades in Language Arts and Mathematics while in our program. We also focus on developing the New Basic Skills in our students, including their Oral Communication and Leadership skills. A main focus of the program is our Apprenticeships, where community volunteers lead 10 week sessions with students on a topic that they are passionate about. Apprenticeships culminate in a WOW! Showcase, where students are able to teach back to the community about what they have mastered as apprentices.

Purpose of Agency: All children deserve to experience the simple joys of their youth. But sadly, many are missing out. Charlotte Rescue Mission
Purpose of Agency: The Charlotte rescue Mission provides a free, 90 day residential recovery program to predominately homeless men and women addicted to drugs and or alcohol. This program includes the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. The men’s program supervisors a 130-bed facility. The women’s program is a 12-bed facility. Through our program clients receive: food, clothing, lodging; individual and group counseling; addiction education; worship services; life skills training; family education and services; and an opportunity for GED completion.
