Although the numbers are staggering, the Guardian ad Litem program provides an opportunity for people to make a difference. Guardian ad Litem Program
Purpose of Agency:
Every five minutes a child is abused or neglected in North Carolina. In Mecklenburg County there can be between 800-1,000 children  who are thrust into the court system through no fault of their own. Some are victims of violence, psychological torment or sexual abuse. Others have been neglected or even abandoned by their own parents. Most of them are confused and all of them are frightened. Although the numbers are staggering, the Guardian ad Litem program provides an opportunity for people to make a difference. You serve as a trained advocate in court by getting to know the child and the child's case and by preparing a written report to help the judge understand what is best for the child and to ultimately find them a safe, permanent home.

There are always children waiting for a volunteer to advocate for their interests and you can be that voice! Students volunteering with our organization can serve as Guardians to abused and neglected children by advocating for their best interest in court. Students will work to learn about their child and their child's case by meeting with them and visiting their home and speaking with social workers and teachers to try to determine what would be best for a positive outcome.
Student Requirements: Volunteers provide a constant in the child’s life therefore we ask for a 1 year commitment from our volunteer. Please visit our website to complete an application if you’re interested in volunteering. Once your application is received we will run your criminal background check and then call you for an interview. If we feel you’re right for the program we will then invite you to our pre-service training (training is 30 hours: Tuesday and Thursday evenings and one Saturday morning for 3 weeks). PLEASE NOTE: This opportunity is best suited for students looking for long term internships and/or volunteer opportunities. Please inquire about short-term special projects as it relates to marketing, research assignments, etc. We are open to outside-the-box opportunities for those who cannot commit to a full year.
