Martin Luther King Challenge

MLK Challenge

Mark your calendars: January 19, 2009

“Everybody can be great... because anybody can serve.” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The MLK Challenge is an annual service event held on MLK Day in January. Participating students are randomly assigned to groups and given a service project at a local organization that they must work together to complete by the end of the day. By serving their community, students celebrate the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Some previous challenges participants completed include:

Challenge: Carolina Raptor Center- This team must buy supplies and build perches for the birds. Students will work at Harper Campus in the Welding dept. to complete this task before taking the finished product to the Raptor Center.
Challenge: Habitat Re-Store- Students are to take apart and pack the donated shelving from Rhodes Furniture. The shelving must be disassembled and packed in a semi for transport to the new Habitat Re-Store location.
Challenge: CMPD Animal Control- Team must care for the shelter’s homeless lobby kenneled cats, kittens, and puppies through kennel cleaning, animal feeding, and animal interaction. Notes on the animals’ personalities also need to be posted within the shelter to help market them to the visiting adopting public.
Challenge: Mallard Ridge Neighborhood- This is a brand new community center that really needs some help. Students need to clean, reorganize, and help stock this center. Help get this center off to the right start!
