The course list includes the tentative dates and times of the class, a brief course description, any special requirements or alternative course locations and the instructor(s). You can click on the instructor's page to review instructor bios.

Basic Tools for Courtroom Survival

Officers learn that courtroom trial can be as much about what an officer did, said, and wrote during the investigation and courtroom preparation phase concerning a case; as it is about guilt or innocence. This course is designed to develop knowledge and introduce skills necessary for conducting and presenting an effective prosecution. The class is instructed in 5 stages: Effective Note Taking, Investigative Report Writing, Preparation of Affidavits, Courtroom Presentation, Informant Development and Control.
This course is a must for all investigators and officers that present cases for prosecution.
This class is restricted to law enforcement, detention, corrections and fire personnel.

Community Oriented Policing

This is an 8 hour course conducted on Campus of UNCC.
This course is designed for law enforcement officers belonging to agencies that have implemented or are planning to implement Community Oriented Policing (COP). This course covers the elements of the community policing philosophy, the importance of community members in collaborative partnerships with law enforcement officers, and the nature of community problem solving efforts. A simple but effective model for community problem solving is introduced to help course participants develop appropriate problem solving techniques. Community members and public officials are especially welcome to participate in this course.

Executive Protection Course: Permissive Environment (Level I EP)

This course will be conducted at the North Campus 0800-1700.
This course is designed to provide law enforcement officers with the skills, knowledge and ability to provide security for individuals of a high profile or high risk nature. Officers will learn methods to protect the principal from harm in a permissive environment. Instructional topics include preplanning, setting up an identification system, protecting the principal while in transit, on a parade line and in structured environments and areas. This course is a prerequisite to the next level of executive protection in a non-permissive environment.

Field Training Officer Course

All classes will be conducted at the North Campus 0800-1700.
This 40 hour course is designed to prepare experienced officers for the task of training newly hired officers that have successfully completed State-mandated basic training programs. Lecture and practical exercises are the primary methods used to conduct this training. Course content includes the role of the field training officer, the training function, interpersonal communication skills, ethics, civil liability, report writing and evaluations, leadership skills, performance evaluations, principles of counseling, and problem solving.
This course is recommended for law enforcement and detention officers who will fill the role as field trainers.

Interview & Interrogation

This course will be conducted at the North Campus, room CJ 119, 0800-1700.
This 4 day course is designed to develop knowledge and introduce basic skills necessary for conducting effective interviews and interrogations. It will focus on the nine-step Reid Technique and on cognitive interviewing. Also discussed will be statement analysis which is a system for processing both oral and written statements to detect deception.
This class is restricted to law enforcement, detention and corrections personnel.

LEBA Advanced Police Mountain Bike Course

This 32 hr course covers the following topics and exercise: training rides, slow speed and high speed drills refresher, tactical refresher, advanced firearms, advanced mechanics, advanced off road riding skills, and night riding.
Officers attending will need to bring a mountain bike in good working order, helmet (bike must be street legal for night exercises), helmet, gloves and eye protection (shatter proof sunglasses), one spare inner tube and one set of # 4,5 and 6 Allen wrenches Toe clips and straps or clipless pedals are also required. It is also recommended that officers be of an average + physical condition due to the nature of the course.

LEBA Mountain Bike Patrol Course

This 40 hr course covers all aspects of police bike patrols and is open to any sworn law enforcement or Military Police. The course includes: nutrition, effective cycling, accident prevention, maintenance, slow speed balance drills, emergency braking, stair ascents and decent, suspect apprehension, off-road riding and firearms. Students must pass the written examination by a score of 70%. Practical exercises must be successfully performed and passed to the satisfaction of the Instructor(s) teaching the course. Students must: be able to successfully "Exit" the mountain bike safely and quickly, be able to demonstrate a full emergency braking using the front brake only, the rear brake only, and both brakes, demonstrate a safe and quick simulated arrest of a suspect on foot, and complete training rides using effective cycling techniques to pass this course.

Leadership and Management

This course will be conducted at the North Campus 0800-1700.
This course will take the theoretical aspects of leadership and translate the theory into techniques and strategies for new supervisors and leaders, and leaders at mid to upper levels of management. This course is about leadership, supervision, and responsibilities, regardless of command rank. New sergeants will learn techniques of how to command a squad, and command staff will learn techniques of how to supervise a department. These techniques can be used on a daily basis to develop a winning team. Some of the topics covered include counseling, disciplinary problems, leadership ethics, how to build a winning team, dealing with difficult subordinates and supervisors, liability and documentation, and how to improve the culture and climate of an organization.
This course is recommended for all supervisory levels. This course would also benefit Fire and EMS supervisors.

LIDAR (SMI) Certification Course

This course is designed to certify operators in the use of LIDAR speed measuring equipment used by their agencies. The principal methods of instruction are lecture and demonstration. Current certification as probationary or general status as a law enforcement officer and certification as a RADAR Operatior are prerequisites for enrollment. Course includes field practice and testing, both written and practical. Students are required to pass a State certification exam. Students should bring a calculator to class.

This is not a basic Rapid Deployment Course. Students must have attended a basic course to attend this refresher.
This course is designed to refresh previously learned techniques, tactics and skills officers will use to confront and neutralize an active shooter in a school or business. This course will follow the established criteria established through the Department of Justice and the North Carolina Justice Academy. Participants should bring their duty belt, holster, unloaded firearm and flashlight. Do not bring loaded magazines, pepper spray, batons or other weapons.

Tactical Operations I (TO-I)

This course will be conducted at the North Campus 0800-1700.
Tactical Operations I is a basic level tactical course. The course consists of equipment selection, command operations, communications, preplanning, tactical diagramming, room assaults, building assaults, vehicle assaults and covert apprehension. There will be NO LIVE FIRE during this course.
This is a prerequisite course for Tactical Operations II (TO-II).
Equipment List: Students should only train with equipment issued or authorized by their agency. We have the philosophy of train with what you have. Body Armor, service weapon, helmet, eye protection, gloves and any other individual issued tactical equipment should be brought to the class if authorized by their agency.

Training Officer’s Survival Guide

This course is designed to assist law enforcement instructors and Field Training Officers accomplish effective interaction and leadership with trainees and students. The course will give training officers needed personal tools to become an effective trainer, or enhance their skills as a trainer. The course will cover: (1) the elementary principals of communication, (2) skills particular to handling difficult people, (3) instructor/trainer responsibilities regarding the learning process, (4) basic counseling techniques that will aid in the solution of common recruit and staff problems, (5) information to help instructors/trainers recognize and dissipate signs of acute stress in themselves and their trainees so that maximum learning is achieved.
This course will benefit Field Training Officers, law enforcement and other emergency response instructors, and supervisors who play a role in the development of staff and personnel. This course is restricted to law enforcement officers, fire fighters, correctional officers, detention officers and emergency medical personnel.
