Frequently Asked Questions

What is Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET)? The Basic Law Enforcement Training program is designed to prepare entry level individuals with the cognitive and physical skills needed to become certified law enforcement officers in North Carolina.

The course comprises 34 separate blocks of instruction to include such topics as Firearms, Drivers Training, Motor Vehicle Laws and Arrest, Search and Seizure. The BLET course is filled with practical exercises and an extensive Ethics section that is woven throughout the training experience.

When is the BLET program offered? BLET is offered during the day, twice an academic year during the Fall and Spring semesters. The next scheduled class begins in August of 2008. The primary BLET operating hours are 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday-Friday.

Is a night version of BLET offered? Not at this time, although a night curriculum is being considered.

Will my law enforcement certification from another state transfer to N.C. or will I have to attend BLET in its entirety? Out-of-state transferees will be evaluated to determine the amount and quality of their training and experience. At a minimum, out-of-state candidates must have two years of full-time, sworn law enforcement experience and have successfully completed a basic law enforcement training course accredited by the state from which they are transferring in order to be considered for transfer to a North Carolina law enforcement agency. Out-of-State transferees cannot have a break in service exceeding (1) one year.

Persons who have completed training as a federal law enforcement officer or a military police officer will be required to complete the Commission-accredited BLET in its entirety and successfully pass the state comprehensive examination prior to employment.

After graduating from BLET, does the certification last indefinitely? No. Graduates must be hired or “sworn-in” by a law enforcement agency within (12) months from their graduation date or the certification will expire. Anyone who does not maintain a “sworn” status with an agency for a period of (12) months will see their BLET certification expire. BLET must be taken again in its entirety for re-certification.

Will my previous training, classes, or academy experiences from another state transfer and count toward a N.C. BLET certification? No. The N.C. Training & Standards Division in Raleigh is the authorizing agency on this issue. Questions should be directed to (919)716-6470.

How do I get started? Contact the BLET Director to set up a preliminary interview at (704)330-4169. After eligibility has been determined an application packet will be issued.
