FAQ Assisted Living Training

Q. How much college education do I need in order to enter this training?

A. You need to have 60 college credits in any field of study, OR 30 college credits PLUS two years of supervisory experience in an assisted living.

Q. Do you need original transcripts from me?

A. Yes, and they need to be sent to our Student Records Office. See the information and address on the flyer for this training. To get to it, click on the link below the description of the training on the website.

Q. Once I complete this training will I receive a license from the State of North Carolina?

A. No. This training is just one of the requirements towards licensure. Once you complete the training, you also have to complete a state exam which is administered by the Division of Facility Services, not CPCC. To find out more about the exam and dates the exam is offered, go to the following website:

You will also need to submit fingerprints to the Division of Facility Services, together with the Certificate you earn once you complete the CPCC AIT coursework and preceptorship.

Q. What are the job opportunities for Assisted Living Administrators?

A. The job opportunities are good. However, those graduates who are hired straight out of the training, either have worked in assisted living, or have a bachelor’s or masters degree that is valuable to the field of health care and assisted living. As an entry level person with the training and certification, there are ways to enter the field of assisted living as a stepping stone into an administrator position. Some of our graduates have been hired as marketing directors or human resource managers.

Q. What is the salary range for this position?

A. It is difficult to predict the salary that you could earn, as it depends on your prior experience and educational level at the time of completion of the training. It also depends on the size of the assisted living as there are a wide variety of assisted living companies out there, some of which have large budgets and many residents. It is safe to say that the range is anywhere from $35,000 to $75,000 annually.

Q. How do I go about finding a preceptor?

A. It is the responsibility of those entering the training to find their own preceptors. CPCC will furnish you with a list of approved preceptors that we receive from the Division of Facility Services. We will also give you names of preceptors who have worked with our trainees in the past. We also invite all approved preceptors to an orientation for the training, as a way for those in the training to meet potential preceptors.
