Metals From the Past: Forging the Future

This is the content of the History/Welding Learning Community for Fall 2008.

“Metals from the Past: Forging the Future”

Basic Welding Processes and World Civilizations I

The Learning Community “Metals from the Past: Forging the Future” at CPCC Harper Campus brings together WLD 112, Basic Welding Processes, and HIS 111, World Civilizations I. Students participate in the two classes in the same semester. The course material in each class follows the regular syllabus focusing on the history of metals. Topics covered include the Bronze Age and Iron Age and how metals have influenced the rise and fall of civilizations. The HIS 111 class can often fulfill a social sciences requirement for CPCC programs and certificates.

Final Project:

In the HIS 111 class, students have an opportunity to use their metalworking skills as part of a final project illustrating the use of metals in history.

Students can participate in on ongoing Service Learning project rebuilding the old smithy at Historic Rosedale Plantation as a living history exhibit.
