eLocker Troubleshooting Guide

eLocker uses a technology called WebDAV to provide remote access to student's network folders via the web. WebDAV is an open standard which extends the http protocol to allow users to edit and manage files on remote web servers. WebDAV stands for Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning.

Since WebDAV is an open standard, it is implemented differently, or not at all, depending on the software configuration of the client computer. A good resource for information on WebDAV is available at http://webdav.org.

Several issues have been identified that can prevent certain users from connecting to WebDAV. Part of the problem is the wide variety of client configurations on student computers. Other issues are caused by the varied support offered by several different Microsoft products. A good overview of these issues, which is summarized below, is provided at http://www.atarex.com/services/support/webdav-msft.shtml

Microsoft Users:
Prior to Microsoft XP, support for WebDAV was included in Internet Explorer browsers. With the release of Windows XP, it appears that Microsoft has moved support of WebDAV out of Internet Explorer (beginning with version 6 bundled with XP) and into the OS. Users who are unable to use the E-Locker quick access tool should check the version of Windows and IE they are using and refer to the following support information:

If you are using IE 6.x and haven't had any luck with the quick access tool above, you may:

  • Method 1
    1. In Internet Explorer, click Open on the File menu.
    2. In the Open box, type https://elocker.cpcc.edu/home/STUDENTSNAPID, where STUDENTSNAPID is the student's snapID.
    3. Click to select the Open As Web Folder check box, and then click OK.
  • Method 2
    1. In My Computer, double-click Web Folders, and then double-click Add Web Folder.
    2. In the Type The Location To Add box, type https://elocker.cpcc.edu/home/STUDENTSNAPID, where STUDENTSNAPID is the student's snapID, and then click Next.
    3. Type a descriptive name for your Web Folder shortcut, and then click Finish.
  • Method 3 - use the CPCC eLocker Webdrive Tool (only available for Windows OS).

Apple Users:
Even though Internet Explorer is available for Mac, it is not the same as the software that is available for Windows and does not support WebDAV. Goliath is a free WebDAV client available for Macintosh OS Classic and OS X.

Linux Users:
Cadaver is a free command line WebDAV client available for Linux.

Alternate Clients:
If none of these measures are successful, try using an alternate client to access E-Locker. DAV Explorer is a free Java client that should work for Windows users. (Note: You must have Java installed to use this package.)

You can find a number of potential software solutions at http://webdav.org/projects/.
