National Sign Language Interpreter Written Exam Study Prep Course

This online Corporate and Continuing Education (CCE) course will assist with preparing for the National Written Sign Language Interpreter Examination. The college uses the Moodle platform to deliver course content. You choose the location and the time you attend class. All you need is an Internet connection. Students are required to participate in online discussion questions based on the guidelines from RID-NAD (www.rid.org/nts.html).

Course discussion questions will include: multicultural aspects of interpreting, sociolinguistic parameters within interpreting, ethics, history of the interpreting profession, etc.

As a member of the class you will be asked to participate in collaborative learning discussions. To further support learning, there are practice self study exercises that can be taken as many times as you like. Benefits for students encourages critical thinking, learning from others in a group setting and gaining new knowledge.

This course is a student centered environment that helps students build upon their existing skills and knowledge, rather than simply reading and answering rote questions. Students to discuss and collaborate on various interpreting related topics that will be beneficial for passing the written sign language interpreting exam.

Students will earn 3.2 CCE credit hours upon completion of the course. Students can earn CEU's from RID for an additional fee.Contact our local North Carolina Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf markwise@aol.com .

1. Interpreting: An Introduction by Nancy Frishberg. Aavailable from RID's bookstore at www.rid.org/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi

2. So, You Want To Be An Interpreter by Jan Humphrey, and the accompanying study guide. Third Edition only, available through Harris Communications www.harriscomm.com

If you are a new student, you will need to first apply online for admission. To register online, go to mycollege2.cpcc.edu . The course prefix, number, and section are HSW 7020 85. The cost of this course is $90.00
