Where Do I Start?

Thank you for choosing CPCC! You are about to embark on an exciting journey destined to take you great places. Before you start your journey there are a few details to address.

Students who plan to enter a degree, diploma, or certificate program should complete these steps before registration begins:

1. Students should complete a CPCC admissions form, which is available at the Welcome Center, the Admissions Center, any area center or campus, by mail or online. You can also download the form. Students should indicate the program they plan to enter. NOTE: Students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university after one or two years at CPCC should select either the Associate in Arts, Associate in Fine Arts, or Associate in Science Degree program.

2. Students who plan to apply for financial aid and scholarship consideration should begin the process now. (Applications are available from the Financial Aid Office, Welcome Center, area centers and campuses, and in all local high school guidance counseling offices.) The first step for any assistance, including scholarships, is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and mail to the federal government’s Processing Center in the envelope provided. It can also be submitted online. CPCC's Financial Aid Department will contact students by mail when their processed student aid reports have been drawn down.

3. Students should have official transcripts mailed from each high school and/or college previously attended to CPCC Admissions, PO Box 35009, Charlotte, NC 28235-5009. The name the student currently uses and social security number should appear on each transcript. High school transcripts must include graduation date. NOTE: Students who have an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university are not required to submit high school transcripts.

4. Students applying for a certificate program are not required to submit high school transcripts, however, students who decide to continue their studies and apply for a diploma or degree program should refer to #3 above for regulations. Students applying for financial aid/veterans' affairs still need a high school transcript on file.

5. Students who are unable to produce official high school transcripts must present evidence of high school graduation.

6. Students who have completed college level coursework at another institution and are seeking a diploma or degree from CPCC must fill out a request for an official transcript evaluation. Forms are available in the Student Records Office at any CPCC campus. Students with credit from international colleges or universities must have transcripts evaluated by an external agency.

7. Students should take placement tests as required for the degree, diploma, or certificate program they plan to enter. Appointments for placement tests are made at Admissions on all campuses or by calling (704) 330-CPCC. Assessment testing is also available at other CPCC locations. Students who mail in their admissions forms will receive mailed instructions for scheduling appointments for assessment.

8. After placement tests, students should meet with an academic advisor. The advisor will provide an overview of their assessment results, program information, an educational plan, and recommended lists of courses for which to register during their first term at CPCC. To make an appointment please view www.cpcc.edu/ican/appointments.

Additional Information

A. Students who want to change their programs need to make an appointment with a program counselor for the new program before registration begins.

B. New students who need career/life planning assistance before selecting a program should do the following:

1. Get an admissions form from the Welcome Center, the Admissions Center, one of the area centers or campuses, or request that one be mailed by calling (704) 330-CPCC, or submit online at www.cpcc.edu. This should be completed and submitted before registration begins. Indicate "Undecided," instead of selecting a program. For students who have a general idea about their specific area of study, but still prefer to indicate "Undecided," program areas have been included in the "Undecided" category on the Admissions Form to allow students to select a program area as closely related to their specific interests as possible.

2. Follow step under A7 for assessments.

3. Meet with an academic advisor before registering to discuss test results and receive assistance in developing an educational plan that correlates with life goals and objectives.

C. Currently enrolled students who need career counseling may schedule an appointment with a career/life planning counselor by calling (704) 330-6551 at the Central Campus or contacting any of the CPCC campuses.

D. General orientations are held four times per term or can be viewed online at www.cpcc.edu/ican/orientation. New students should attend one of these sessions to receive more in-depth information on College resources, program and career options, and tips on how to be successful students
