Concurrent Enrollment Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements for a high school student to participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC)?

  • The student must be 16 years of age before the first day of the term in order to be eligible to register and take curriculum and/or continuing education classes.
  • High school students (public, private, or home school) from other NC counties may participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program at CPCC, if their local community college does not offer the course the student wants. We encourage you to check with your local community college first.
  • In the high school, the student must be taking the equivalent of one-half of a full-time schedule. (This means the student should be enrolled in at least 3 subjects to equal 1/2 of the school day.)
  • The Concurrent Enrollment Approval form must be completed and signed by the high school administrator, the student and the student's parent/guardian. (NOTE: A new Concurrent Enrollment approval form must be submitted for each registration period.) For home schools, the parent and student must present the letter (or card) from the State of North Carolina which authorizes the school to operate as a home school. This letter (or card) must be presented at the time of registration.
  • First-time students participating in the Concurrent Enrollment Program must present a photo ID (NC driver’s license, NC State ID card, or passport), along with the signed Concurrent Enrollment approval form, the home school card or letter from NC, and all required CPCC registration forms at the time of registration. If the student does not have the above ID documentation, they must present the original copy of the birth certificate.
  • Concurrent Enrollment students are regarded by CPCC as any other college student and receive identical treatment. This means all students are responsible for their own behavior, attendance, and communication with instructors.
  • Coursework cannot be used to replace regular required high school coursework.
  • CPCC awards college credits only. Whether high school credit is awarded is up to the receiving high school.
  • Please note: Spring term high school graduates are NOT eligible to participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program for Summer term.

What are the benefits to my child or to me as a parent if we participate in the Concurrent Enrollment program?

  • Concurrent Enrollment students may take any eligible course (a curriculum course numbered 100 or higher) available in the current college schedule for which they meet the prerequisite.
  • Some courses require placement test scores that are high enough to enable the student to enroll in college level courses and some courses have prerequisites, so check the college catalogue carefully.
  • Concurrent Enrollment students are not eligible to enroll in remedial or developmental courses (courses numbered below 100)
  • Tuition and fees for college level courses are waived for high school students who participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program at CPCC. Students must pay for continuing education and self-supporting classes.
  • Students must provide their own textbooks and transportation.
  • Courses can be taken on any CPCC campus which offers the course.
  • CPCC awards college credits only. Whether high school credit is awarded is up to the receiving high school.
  • Because students are considered similar to our regular college students, they can begin creating their college transcript while still receiving their high school (secondary) education.

While exempt from payment of tuition and fees for college level classes, students must pay for continuing education and self-supporting classes. At the time of registration, please confirm that no charges for tuition or fees were incurred for college level courses.

  • Note: The fees and tuition will be waived (some courses carry a mandatory student accident insurance fee that cannot be waived) as long as the class is not considered a "continuing education" class or a "self-supporting" class. Students may take those classes, but they will be asked to pay a fee for the course, as well as pay for their textbooks.

  • The CPCC Login application is located at cpcclogin.cpcc.edu. For a peek at the new CPCC Login application, along with the new mycollege (WebAdvisor) application, check out these demonstrations.

Can a Concurrent Enrolled student take "developmental/remedial" courses (courses numbered 100 or less)?

  • No, high school students cannot enroll for the college’s developmental courses during any time of the year, including summer. If a student needs remedial education, they would have to drop out of and be released from the high school/home school to be served by the community college, and then the student would need to be placed in adult high school or GED, not developmental. Developmental courses are for college students only!

When can I register for classes?

  • Concurrent Enrollment Students may register during extended registration published as in person registration with extended hours. Click here for instructions on how to use CPCC's Online Schedule.
  • To start the process, student(s) will complete the college’s admission form: http://www1.cpcc.edu/admissions/
  • If a placement test is required (for English and Math courses), then a test will be administered at a CPCC campus. It is better to take the placement test before the designated Concurrent Enrollment registration, as this is a very busy time. A test score will be automatically given at the conclusion of the exam. Please request to speak to an Advisor to have scores interpreted before attempting to register for classes. Please contact each campus for best available test times. Some campuses require appointments for testing. Please go to http://www.cpcc.edu/maps/ for campus locations and phone numbers or call 704-330-2722 and request the phone number of the campus at which you wish to test.
