Concurrent Enrollment General Information

college experience banner

The Concurrent Enrollment Program provides eligible students a head start on a college education, advanced vocational preparation and personal enrichment opportunities. (Note: NC high schools include public, private, or home schools authorized by NC to operate as home schools.)

Eligible high school students must be 16 years old, currently enrolled in a North Carolina high school at least one-half of a full time schedule (at least 3 high school courses or one-half of the high school day), and be making satisfactory progress towards graduation in order to participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program. Participating students must have the approval and signature of their principal or other designate person on the Concurrent Enrollment approval form, as well as the parent's approval and signature, and the student must also sign the form.

Concurrent Enrollment students are regarded by CPCC as any other college student and receive identical treatment. This means all students are responsible for their own behavior, attendance, and communication with instructors.

High school students who are at least 16 years old and live in other NC counties may participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program if their local community college does not offer the course the student wants. We encourage you to check with your local community college.

Concurrent Enrollment students may register for any approved 100-level college course or higher for which they have met the pre-requisites. College level courses include traditional, online, and teleweb courses (Distance Learning).

Concurrent Enrollment students enroll in college-level courses and begin creating a college transcript which is a permanent record.

Tuition and fees for approved college level courses are waived for high school students who participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program at CPCC. Students must pay for continuing education and self-supporting classes.

Concurrently enrolling students are not eligible to take remedial or developmental courses (courses numbered below 100 are remedial; for example, MAT090, RED090, ENG080 are remedial courses).

CPCC awards college credits only. Whether high school credit is awarded is up to the receiving high school.

Students may attend any one of CPCC's campuses.

Registration for Concurrent Enrollment students is in-person only and at designated times. Registration may be done at any CPCC campus. Dates are posted below for the term.

Steps in the Enrollment and Registration Process

Please note: Spring term high school graduates are NOT eligible to participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program for Summer term.

  1. Once the student turns 16, the student may begin the admissions process at CPCC.
  2. The student must apply to CPCC for admissions - the first time only - before he/she can begin the registration process. The student can apply in-person or online at http://www.cpcc.edu under the Attending CPCC > Admissions / Registration > Admissions > Apply Online (Do Not click on the orange "Steps to Enroll" logo on the page).  Click here to go directly to the online applcation form.  If you apply online, you will need to choose the "Freshman" option for Program of Interest.
  3. Please have the CPCC admissions process completed before time to register.
  4. If necessary to meet course prerequisite requirements, the student will need to take the Placement Test. Concurrent Enrollment students who are 16 are encouraged to take the Placement Test before the designated Concurrent Enrollment registration period.
(See the section below on Placement Testing information and tips.)
  5. Students are strongly encouraged to take the Placement Test before the first day of designated registration period for Concurrent Enrollment students so that an Academic Advisor is better able to assist the student with appropriate course selection. Without Placement Test scores to use as a guide, Academic Advisors may not be able to assist the student.
  6. Have the Approval form for Concurrent Enrollment completely filled out by the high school administrator. This form must be signed by the student, parent and high school administrator. The Approval form submitted at the point of registration must be the original copy with signatures – CPCC cannot accept photocopies or faxed copies. The Approval form is found at: Concurrent Enrollment Approval Form.
  7. Have a copy of the certification to home school from the State of North Carolina. (please bring the original)
  8. If you have misplaced your home school card or letter from the State of NC, you can go to the website and print only the page on which your home school appears and bring it with you as proof, along with your NC Driver’s License. For a list of all NC home schools listed alphabetically by counties, go to: http://www.ncdnpe.org/html/Counties.html
  9. The student must present a NC ID, NC Drivers License, Passport or original Birth Certificate for proof of age.
  10. The student must fill out a CPCC registration form. This form is found at the Registration counter at any campus.
  11. All Concurrent Enrollment students must register or drop/add in-person during designated dates (see the Schedule for Registration Dates for "Open registration with extended hours.")

Regulations will not allow CPCC to register students prior to the designated registration dates, and CPCC is not able to accept any Concurrent Enrollment registration documents prior to the designated Concurrent Enrollment registration dates.

  12. The Registration process can be done at any CPCC Campus.
  13. A new Concurrent Enrollment Approval form must be submitted for each registration period. The student will also need a new Approval form and copy of NC home school certification each time they add a class.
  14. Tuition and fees for approved college level courses are waived for high school students who participate in the Concurrent Enrollment Program at CPCC. Students must pay for continuing education and self-supporting classes.
  15. At the time of registration, please confirm that no charges for tuition or fees were incurred for approved college level courses. Some classes carry a mandatory insurance charge that cannot be waived.
  16. Because all class sections may not be available due to sections being full or cancelled, it is strongly recommended that the student have alternative plans for taking other sections, or other campus locations, or even other courses before they begin the registration process.

Summary of Forms / Documents Needed for Concurrent Enrollment process:

      • Approval Form for Concurrent Enrollment - completed and signed
      • Letter or Card from NC for home schools. (Please make a copy to leave at CPCC.)
      • CPCC Registration form - completed and signed
      • Photo ID, such as a NC Driver’s License or Passport

  17. Second Short Session registration processes:

Concurrent Enrollment students can register for 2nd short session any time after the designated registration period begins up to a few days before the 2nd short session begins, as long as the student has met the pre-requisites and there is room in the class.

Even if the student has already registered for the term and is adding another course, they still need to submit a new Concurrent Enrollment form with signatures along with the home school letter or card and a CPCC registration form to Add a class.

Students will still need to register in-person and have all documentation at the point of registration. Concurrent Enrollment students are not permitted to register online.

Information about term dates and other Enrollment Services, can be found on the Admissions/Registration/Records website at: http://www1.cpcc.edu/admissions/registration/dates

How to determine if a course will transfer to the UNC System

Using the course description from the CPCC Catalog, look to see if the following phrase is at the end of the course description.

"This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in __________."

This phrase indicates that the course should transfer to other universities in the UNC System, providing that the student has been accepted into the receiving institution's program and has earned a grade of C or better. It is always a good idea to have the catalog of the receiving institution to determine exactly what courses they require for their programs of study.

For more information on the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement, go to:
