Q: What is the difference between the Culinary Technology degree and a certificate?
A: The Culinary Technology degree is a Associate in Applied Science Degree and is awarded after the completion of 65 credit hours made up of Major and Related courses and General Education.
The certificates offered through Culinary Technology are: Baking, Culinary, Garde Manger, (cold food preparation), and Hot Foods and require 13 to 16 credits each to complete. Yes, you can earn certificates on your way to obtaining your Associate’s degree. The credits received for a certificate are applied to the degree to be obtained at a later date.
Q: What is the difference between the Hotel/Restaurant Management degree, diplomas, and certificates?
A: The Hotel/Restaurant Management program has many options available to students. In addition to the two year Associate’s Degree requiring 71 credit hours, the Diplomas – one in Hotel Management, the other in Restaurant Management, require approximately 40 credits each. For the student interested in certificates, CPCC offers seven different ones in Hotel Management, Restaurant Management, Management Skills, and Beverage Operations, requiring a total of 12 to 13 credits each to complete.

Q: At which CPCC campus(es) are these classes held?
A: All Hotel/Restaurant Management and Culinary classes are held on the Central Campus, (near downtown Charlotte). The West Campus (near Charlotte-Douglas Airport) offers the CPCC Institute of Baking, a lock step program, for students wanting to earn the Baking Certificate in one semester.
Q: Do you have classes that are held in the evening?
A: Yes, though some Culinary lab classes, (baking, cooking), must begin at 3:30 p.m. to end by 9:00 p.m. Many Hotel/Restaurant Management lecture classes begin at 6:00 p.m.
Q: How can I get a copy of the college catalog?
A: You may view or download a current CPCC catalog at www.cpcc.edu/attending/catalog. Printed copies may be purchased in person at any CPCC campus for $2.00 each and may also be ordered online. Domestic orders are $4.00, and International orders are $12.00 (including shipping and handling.)
Q: How much do the courses cost?
A: Effective July 1, 2003, the tuition rate for curriculum courses is as follows:
NC residents: $35.50 per credit hour
Non NC residents: $197.00 per credit hour
Some courses charge a lab fee of $12.00 per lab hour credit with a maximum of $48.00 per semester.

Tuition, fees, uniforms, small wares, and textbooks for a two-year Associate degree is approximately $4,500.
Culinary small wares are going to cost approximately $235.00. Plain button chef jackets are approximately $15.00 up and chef pants $10.00 up.
