The Panel Luncheon with the faculty at CATO was a great success.
The lunch was good…the new faculty impressive…
and seeing the grounds and building as they develop was inspirational.
Tidbits Shared
First: Enrollment is up!
There are new Certificates, new courses, and additions to existing courses:
John Holmes is adding GIS to the Pest Mgt. course, seeking Native Flora student volunteers for the Carolina Vegetation Surveys done each summer, adding roof top gardens in Soils and Fertilizer, and exploring a Tree Care Technician Certificate in Arboriculture. (For more details contact John Holmes.)
Frankie Fanelli is developing the new Specialty Crops class, with students working with all the special growers, including hydroponics. She will be including her cut flower experience with Karma dahlias and bulb production in the future courses.
Randy Sigg’s classes are busy building a new patio and pond, with supplies from Blue Max.
John Royals is lobbying for a new warm-season golf green with the exciting new turf, ‘Seashore Paspalum’. It can be irrigated with salt water (or gray water) and can be used for tees, fairways, and greens.
New Turf Classes will include: Turfgrass Computer App with emphasis on use of computer for irrigation design, management, and budget planning; Pesticide Use and Handling for safe use and handling of pesticides.
New Horticulture Classes will include: Landscape Mgt II with focus upon contracts, proposals, pricing, and development plans; Nursery Production will emphasize field production; Greenhouse Production focuses upon production of greenhouse crops, with scheduling and marketing; and Advanced Propagation which will add to the experiential base of the existing propagation course.
New Certificates or changes to Certificates will include: Landscape Maintenance and Horticulture Production
When asked what CHAPS could do to help the Horticulture Program, they asked us to help get new plants planted at CATO, to continue with the educational lectures in February and consider a mutual event with a guest lecturer in the future, and to begin a “speaker’s bureau” of alumni to assist expanding the awareness of the program and the quality of our graduates to the community and to industry in general.
Many thanks to all of you that came!! It was a great crowd.
Fieldtrips
The trip to Southern Highland Reserve on May 2nd was great! Again, this was an exclusive, private tour of this reserve devoted to education of native plants. Their large meeting building is almost finished, and we enjoyed seeing the roof garden that they have completed. We’ll be repeating this trip next year…more to follow. We know it is there is never a “quiet” time, but you don’t want to miss it. NEXT newsletter will have a date.
TIAA-CREF’s North Carolina garden is a possible tour this summer, if anyone is interested. Email Linda Wolfe to start a list.
Items of Notice:
We are actively planning next February’s educational event. It will be held on February 10th at Tate Auditorium at the new CPCC Performance Building on Central Campus (Overcash Center). Our speaker will be Brent Heath from Brent & Becky’s Bulbs. He will present information for the profession on the best bulbs for the industry to use, focusing upon longevity and sequence of bloom, pest resistance, and tenacity. He will provide installation tips also. More information will follow. Put it on your next year’s calendar!
