Some Like It Hot: Water Wise Plants with Impact

“Tough times call for tough plants. This summer's drought emphasized the need for drought tolerant plants which depend less on supplemental irrigation than the traditional landscape. This doesn't mean every garden must look like an Arizona moonscape. There are plenty of plants that can create a visually arresting landscape while still minimizing the reliance on irrigation.”

What’s Happening?

(This section will provide links to activities that are on-going…or new.  If you have some horticultural organization or event that you would like promoted, please send the information to Liz Harris.

Updates from Members & Alumni:

Ed Davis, member and occasional  teacher:

“I'm excited to have found a better part-time work situation.  I am working for a large landscape architecture firm (40+) called Site Solutions. I enjoy my role as 'plant nerd'...so I'm 'stuck' doing planting designs (good place to be stuck!).  Currently my main project is developing a landscape master plan for the Mission Hospitals campus in Asheville.  I work 3 days per week leaving me at least 2 days per week to do freelance work.”  www.sitesolutionspa.com

Tom Bass, member and horticulturalist for CPCC,

was funded to go to Hawaii for the ISA Certified Arborist Convention…someone had to go!

I was in Hawaii for the ISA conference from 26 July through 3 August. The conference was great, but one of the highlights was a presentation by the founder of Arboriculture in Japan. This group has helped people (mostly children) who have physical handicaps learn to climb and subsequently help gain confidence in themselves. I have never seen so many misty eyed arborists in all my life. Other highlights were going to Fosters Botanical Garden and sitting under a ‘BO’ tree (Ficus religiosa) that was propagated from the BO tree that Buddha had sat under for six years to attain Enlightenment and hiking to the top of Diamond Head and a trip to the North Shore”.

Lisa (Selby) Tompkins, member and former president, has been accepted into the LEAP Program at NCSU, and is going to work on getting a Masters!  Way to go Lisa!  As you all may know, Pike’s Nursery (where Lisa worked) has had to close and reorganize.  Lisa decided that this was the time to go forward.  Congrats and good luck.   Information on the LEAP program: http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/agexed/leap/index.html

Doug Ruhren, one of our great supporters, has left DSBG.  From Arlene Main : “We just found out that Doug has taken a position at the American Camellia Society in Macon, Ga. He will be moving there in January with both girls, and they will have a small house right in the garden! Check out the garden at http://www.camellias-acs.com

[Want to network?  Need a job, assistance, or help finding a resource?  Just let me know and I’ll publish! Next newsletter will come in late Feb or early March.]

Well, our newest member is busy becoming younger and more hands-on…. Especially when fishing!  Happy retirement Joe!
