Memo

Re: Prerequisites for EDU courses

Every 10 years community college programs in the N.C. Community College System participate in a self-study (Curriculum Improvement Project: CIP)  to determine what changes should be made in course descriptions, course objectives, required courses and required prerequisites, etc.

For the past two years, Early Childhood faculty (from across the state) have met to evaluate the EDU courses. As a result of this intensive review, the community colleges of North Carolina have voted to implement English and Reading course prerequisites.  This decision is based on the belief that it is important for early childhood students to have a foundation in reading and writing before they take college courses.

Individual colleges were given the option of implementing the new prerequisites as early as Fall 2009 or as late as Fall 2010. Fall 08 the faculty of the Wachovia Early Childhood Program at Central Piedmont Community College unanimously voted to implement prerequisites for 100 (exception EDU 119) and 200 Level courses in Fall 2010.

Upon taking the placement tests in Reading and English, students who are placed in RED 080 and ENG 080 will need to successfully complete (C or better) RED 080 and ENG 080 or ENG 085 before they can take 100 Level EDU courses (except for EDU 119).

In addition, students taking 200 level courses will have to successfully complete (C or better) ENG 090 and RED 090 or ENG 095 (if those are the developmental courses that they placed in) before taking 200 level courses.

Exception: in Fall 2009, all students taking EDU 214 and EDU 284, the new practicum courses,  and  EDU 234 and co-requisite EDU 234a, will have to meet the prerequisites for 200 level courses before taking these courses.

Due to a system change, it became necessary to assign students to advisors based on the first initial of their last name. Below is the alphabetical break down and the advisor assigned to each letter of the alphabet.

Congratulations!  The Wachovia Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree Program in Early Childhood is Nationally Accredited
CPCC's Wachovia AAS Degree Program in Early Childhood was accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young (NAEYC) Children in September of 2007.  Our program is one of a small number of associate degree programs to receive NAEYC accreditation.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation system sets a standard of excellence for early childhood programs that prepare teachers at the associate degree level. The process includes extensive self-study, submission of a Self Study Report, a site visit conducted by a Peer Review Team and an accreditation decision made by a national Commission of early childhood professionals.

The NAEYC associate degree standards are based on recent research in early childhood development and learning. The accreditation standards are performance based and describe what well-prepared graduates of associate degree programs should know and be able to do.
