Responsibilities

Specific suggestions for teaching students with disabilities will be offered in the sections devoted to each disability. This section will discuss several general considerations.

Student Responsibilities

Individuals with disabilities at CPCC are required to:

  • Identify themselves to the counselor in Disability Services.
  • Provide documentation of their disability.
  • Consult with the counselor to determine specific accommodations based on their documentation.
  • Provide the faculty member with the Accommodation Memo, (see page 29).
  • Distribute signed copies of the Accommodation Form.
  • Maintain the same responsibility for their education as non-disabled students including maintaining the same academic progression standards and appropriate behavior.
  • Give timely notification of any needs for reasonable accommodations.
  • Comprehend the course material and communicate that comprehension to the instructor.

Faculty Responsibilities

CPCC's faculty is required to:

  • Cooperate with Disability Services personnel in providing authorized accommodations and support services, in a fair and timely manner.
  • Meet with the student with a disability as quickly as possible especially if the student is reluctant to self-advocate.
  • Provide reasonable accommodations and NOT question the validity of a documented disability when accommodations have been authorized by the college.
  • Not request to examine the student's confidential documentation.
  • Have input and arrange with the student the means for providing accommodations in a particular class.
  • Expect a student with a disability to comprehend the course material and communicate that comprehension to the instructor.

CPCC's Responsibilities

The Community College's responsibilities:

  • Provide information to faculty, staff, students, and guests with disabilities in accessible formats upon request.
  • Ensure that courses, programs, services, jobs, activities, and facilities, when viewed in their entirety, are available and usable in the most integrated and appropriate settings.
  • Evaluate faculty, staff, students, and applicants on their abilities and not their disabilities.
  • Provide or arrange reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services for faculty, staff, students, and guests with disabilities in courses, programs, services, jobs, activities, and facilities.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality of records and communications.
