Multi-Skills Center

The Multi-Skills Center is a short-term training option which provides computer-based, individualized instruction in business and office skills for people with disabilities who work with a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. Life skills and job-seeking strategies are emphasized, in addition to skills courses in keyboarding, word processing, data entry, electronic calculator, and other related courses. Training is conducted in a classroom which resembles an office; the instructor acts as both teacher and office manager.

The training lasts one semester, or 16 weeks. Students meet everyday for five hours and can earn up to ten college credit hours. In addition to office skills, students learn life skills, such as confidence-building, stress management, and communication skills. Participants also learn interviewing strategies, business etiquette, how to dress for interviews, and workplace attitudes which enhance job retention. Job placement is available.

Some of the requirements for program admission that will be considered include a high school diploma or GED certification, minimum eighth-grade reading comprehension level, and CPCC's North Carolina residency requirement. Applicants need to contact a Vocational Rehabilitation counselor to be referred to the program. Funding, including tuition and textbooks, is provided by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and CPCC. For more information on this program, contact Lauren Stayer, 330-6037, Taylor Hall, Room 103.
