Letter from the President
November 30, 1999
Dear Colleagues:
As many of you are aware, the number of students with disabilities on CPCC campuses is growing rapidly. The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in education, employment, transportation, telecommunications, and public accommodations. As a result colleges and universities are continuing to examine issues of accommodation and accessibility. At Central Piedmont Community College, this challenge is no longer the responsibility of one institutional unit, but is the responsibility of each member of the College community regardless of job description.
Having pioneered disability advocacy and service since 1971, CPCC has a strong tradition of promoting the full participation and success of its students. Disability Services and other campus disability advocates regularly assist faculty and staff in accommodating students. This resource handbook serves as a guide of recommendations, suggestions, and examples of appropriate accommodations which ensure that the needs of students with disabilities are met.
As North Carolina's premier workforce development resource, Central Piedmont Community College and its staff are committed to the policy of equal opportunity for students and employees. We value diversity among CPCC's students, and we work to assure that students with disabilities are effectively and meaningfully served by our programs and services. Students are more likely to reach their full potential in education, in the workforce, and in society if faculty and staff assist in removing barriers students with disabilities encounter. Please take the time to review this handbook and contact Disability Services to assist you in maximizing your instructional offerings.
Sincerely,
Tony Zeiss
