Accommodation Information

Tutoring Services

Tutoring services are offered for students needing additional assistance through various resources on campus. These services may be requested at the Academic Learning Center, Student Support Services, or Disability Services.

Request for Notetakers

Notetaking services are provided by the use of classmates. The notetaker is selected by the student or instructor and referred to Disability Services. A contract must be signed by the notetaker. Students are encouraged to utilize alternative methods such as the use of tape recorders, lap-top computers, and other adaptive technologies.

Request for Special Test Administration

To provide services in a cost effective manner and to ensure that appropriate academic standards are maintained, students who require special test administration must agree to and follow the guidelines outlined below. Students who require special test administration must schedule an appointment to take the test 48 hours in advance. When students require readers, transcribers and/or assistive technology testing is done in Disability Services. When students require only a quiet location and extended test time, students are responsible for making arrangements with the Testing Center or with their instructor. When testing is to be done in Disability Services, the instructor and/or student must inform the DS counselor how the test will be obtained for administration.

Quiz Accommodations

Most institutions routinely grant students with disabilities extended time or other special modifications, but often instructors utilize pop quizzes to make sure that students are keeping up with the material and are regularly attending class. This testing format can pose problems for students who read or write more slowly. Instructors need to be aware that pop quizzes might be difficult for some students. It is
recommended that pop quizzes be given at the end of class to allow for extra time.
If other accommodations are needed, prior notice should be given to the office of Disability Services.

Accommodations

  • Evaluate the pop quiz.
  • Give the quiz at the end of class and stay later to allow students with disabilities more time to finish; or use a vacant room nearby to administer the pop quiz.
  • Fax or deliver the quiz to Disability Services a few days beforehand. The student with a disability comes to class, learns about the quiz and goes to the Disability Services office to take the quiz.
  • Have the student take the quiz with the rest of the class, but allow him/her to talk with you afterward to clarify answers.
  • Allow the student to take a make-up quiz.

Sometimes a pop quiz is only one or two questions. It is not fair to assume that some students with learning disabilities will not be able to complete the test in the time allotted. The above information is provided for assisting students for whom pop quizzes might require more time.
