Volunteer Tutors
Volunteer tutors provide assistance to students working on basic skills in the ABLE / GED labs. Tutors work under the direction of instructors on duty in the labs and generally donate a minimum of one hour per week.
Volunteer tutors are an important part of the ABLE/ GED program and provide additional support and assistance for struggling students. No formal instructional training or teaching experience is necessary to be a tutor. Orientation for new tutors is required and offered on a regular basis and covers the operation of the labs, materials used and program guidelines. Tutors are offered pairings with a specific student at a scheuled time or may choose to drop in the lab and tutor any available student needing assistance at that time.
Areas of tutor support include basic reading and math through highschool subject areas of instruction including some algebra and geometry. Generally, tutors are encouraged to tutor in instructional areas of their choosing with consideration for proficiency .
Student populations are quite diverse and range in age from sixteen through older senior adults. Many cultural backgrounds are represented in the student populations. Academic levels of students range widely. Students with very limited reading skills are found along with those studying for highschool diplomas.
Program commitment for most volunteers is a minimum of one hour per week. Some tutors, however, work with multiple students and donate greater amounts of time. Professional organizations and businesses are welcome supporters of the volunteer tutor program.
