The Job Seeking Skills Class (HRD 6004)
The question often asked by job seekers is “How do you conduct a job search in 2006?” This question is asked by those re-entering the job market due to corporate restructuring. It is also asked by career changers, trailing spouses, empty nesters, retired people, parents with children in school or college, recent college or high school graduates, and college students. Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte offers a job seeking class to help people answer this question. Students qualify for a fee if unemployed or notified of pending layoff.
This course provides employability skills training for unemployed and underemployed adults by addressing the following components: assessment of individual’s assets and limitations, development of a positive self-concept, development of employability skills, development of communication skills, development of problem solving skills and awareness of the impact of information technology in the workplace.
For many who take this class, it is the first time they have had the opportunity or found it necessary to examine what they really want to do with their careers. They want to know how to determine direction and find opportunities that give them satisfaction in the workplace. This class helps students by teaching them how to identify their interests and values and how to research job descriptions that meet their needs. They are then taught how to market and sell themselves through networking, interviewing, resumes, and applications. These remain useful as situations change in the course of careers. Those students completing this 33-hour course will have all the tools to conduct a successful job search.
The classes are help twice weekly for 5 ½ weeks. A student may take either a morning or an afternoon class. Morning classes are held at the Central Campus on Elizabeth Avenue, and afternoon classes may meet at other CPCC campuses. Please call or check the schedule Classes are repeated every 6-7 weeks throughout the year. Registration is done in class on the first or second day of class.
