GED General Educational Development

The General Educational Development (GED) program is another option for students who have not completed high school.  Upon completion of the exam students will receive a high school equivalency diploma issued by the North Carolina Department of Community Colleges. The classes are FREE.

  • Enrolling students must be at least 16 years old before they can be admitted to the program. Students under the age of 18 must complete a release form.
  • All students take a pre-assessment test. This test will help determine if the student is ready for the GED tests or whether he or she needs to take GED classes to be prepared for the GED tests.
  • A student must pass five individual tests to earn the GED diploma:
    • writing skills (including a written essay)
    • mathematics
    • science
    • social studies
    • literature.
  • Students can enroll for GED classes at any one of our ABLE centers.
  • Students progress at their own pace and attend classes when it best fits their schedule.
  • There is no charge for pre-assessment or for GED classes.
  • Students may purchase books to assist with their studies.

For more information, call the ABLE center you would like to attend, or call (704) 330-6129.
