Summary Statement
CPCC’s Environmentally Sustainable Practices
Clearly, there is still a tremendous amount to be done in this ambitious effort, but we feel confident that with the help of the many committed internal and community partners that we are making an important difference in our community. It is heartening to discover the number of passionate and dedicated
individuals who are willing not just to accept sustainability on a conceptual level, but are willing to make the difficult and sometimes inconvenient and expensive choices to live a more environmentally responsible lifestyle.
At CPCC, we believe that being a part of the process of educational awareness of sustainability and environmental advocacy is as important as any work we at the community college can do.
This nomination for the “Green Non-Profit Educational Program of the Year” is submitted by Ernie McLaney; Program Coordinator for the Futures Institute and the Center for Sustainability,
Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, NC.

Dear June,
We are happy to be partnering wit the Carolinas Clean Air Coalition in the development of ozone gardens as part of our broader goal of creating sustainable landscapes and wildlife habitats at all six of our campuses. We believe that using native plants which are sensitive to ozone pollution in our habitat sites will be an effective tool for educating students, staff, and the public about Charlotte's air quality problems.
Many of the native plants for the ozone garden like Black-eyed Susa, Milkweed, Coneflower, and Elderberry are all wildlife-friendly to bes, birds, adn butterflies. Installing an ozone garden area in each abitat will provide an added educational feature at each of the siz campuses listed below:
- Central Campus; midtown Charlotte
- Cato Campus; UNCC area
- Harper Campus; southwest Charlotte
- Levine Campus, Matthews
- North Campus; Huntersville
- Harris Campus; west Charlotte.
Our horticultural department will discuss plant selection and purchasing arrangements with your organization. We have a small amount of funds available for each campus and would welcome donations of plants and plant signage for the ozone gardens. CPCC's studetns and staff will help with planting and maintencance, but we would appreciate additional volunteers from teh Clean Air Coalition.
Our president and the deans of each campus are enthusiastic about this new commitment to environmental stewardship. I look forward to working with you as a community partner in this effort.
Sincerely,
Ernie McLaney
