Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship is a skilled trade employee training program that combines on-the-job training with technical instruction.  The person learning the trade is called an Apprentice and is taught by a skilled worker called a Journeyman.  The technical education is provided by CPCC Harper Campus, and the on-the-job training is provided by an employer.  The employer recruits employees who enter into a written Apprenticeship agreement with the employer.  The employer then agrees to train the worker, and the employee agrees to work at assigned tasks and attend related classes.  Once training is complete, the Department of Labor issues a nationally recognized Certificate of Completion to the program graduate.

Apprenticeship is an excellent way to obtain high-quality occupational skills.  Employers participate in the training, so apprentice employees become familiar with the employer’s work processes, equipment, and policies during the training program.  If you are a student, looking for an alternative to a four-year college degree, consider apprenticeship training. Apprenticeship programs offer the best of both worlds - paid work experience and related educational instruction. An apprenticeship will prepare you to become skilled in all the areas of an occupation, acquiring the necessary knowledge and abilities to perform the job.

Apprenticeship graduates are paid very well. Beginning apprentices’ wages steadily increase as knowledge and skill increases. An apprentice can expect to receive a raise periodically if their progress is satisfactory. The expected wages will be outlined in the agreement between the apprentice and the employer providing the on-the-job training. This agreement will also clarify the length of the training, the related technical instruction, and the skills to be learned. Hiring statistics have shown that after completion of apprenticeship programs, journey-worker wages have steadily increased throughout the years.
