last modified 2008-04-30 07:14

On Tuesday, May 13, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) will hold graduation ceremonies at Cricket Arena in Charlotte at 7:00 p.m. Senator Elizabeth Dole will speak at the commencement exercises.

Senator Dole has had a remarkable public service career, serving five United States Presidents. The first woman elected to represent North Carolina in the U.S. Senate, she serves on the Armed Services, Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Small Business and Aging Committees.

From 1969 to 1973, she served as Deputy Assistant to President Nixon for Consumer Affairs. In 1983, she joined President Reagan’s Cabinet as Secretary of Transportation, the first woman to hold that position. As the Transportation Secretary, she was the first woman to serve as the departmental head of a branch of the military, the U.S. Coast Guard. She was sworn in by President Bush as the nation’s 20th Secretary of Labor in 1989, and in 1991, she left President Bush’s cabinet to become only the second woman since founder Clara Barton to serve as President of the American Red Cross.

Her awards are numerous, ranging from honors for civic service and leadership in government to accolades for her charitable commitments and dedication to issues surrounding women in the workplace. A native of Salisbury, North Carolina, she graduated with distinction from Duke University and earned a degree from Harvard Law School. She also holds a master’s degree in education and government from Harvard.

During the commencement exercises, two awards will be presented – the Distinguished Service Award and the Richard H. Hagemeyer Educational Advancement Award. Both awards will be presented at the 7:00 p.m. ceremony.

In addition, the Adult High School and GED graduation ceremony will be held on May 13 at Cricket Arena at 1:30 p.m. The Adult High School program at CPCC is affiliated with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, which awards the diplomas. Dr. Peter Gorman, Superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be the guest speaker.

”At CPCC, we take great pride in our outstanding graduates,” states Dr. Tony Zeiss, president of Central Piedmont Community College. “Our commencement exercise reflects the hard work of our students and celebrates another milestone in their lives. We are excited that Senator Dole has agreed to join us in this celebration.”
