On Monday, December 11, Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) held a 100th birthday celebration for long-time friend, supporter and retiree of the College, Powell Majors. In addition, the College announced the results of a scholarship fundraising effort in honor of Majors.

Majors began his legacy in the Charlotte area in 1928, serving as an accountant with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Company. He later joined Southern Asbestos Company as treasurer, and then served as treasurer for Lance for more than 25 years. His professional career then led to a position as director of the Central Piedmont Community College Foundation, where he worked for 19 years. He since has been a strong supporter and advocate for the College.

Majors has been an outstanding community servant in the Charlotte area, serving as Trustee of the National Kidney Foundation, past President of the Charlotte Rotary Club, past president of the American Red Cross, and CPCC literacy tutor. He has been an active member of Dilworth United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, acting on the administrative board of the Council on Ministries, and active in the Methodist Conference Board of Education.

Majors and his wife of 73 years, Dot, have two children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

During the birthday celebration, Tommy Norman, President of the Board of Directors for the CPCC Foundation; and Luther Moore, President of the Charlotte Rotary Club, made remarks. In addition, Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of CPCC, read a proclamation from Mayor Pat McCrory. Over the past year, Dr. Zeiss, the Charlotte Rotary, and the CPCC Foundation, have been involved in raising funds for a scholarship in honor of Majors. Part of the birthday celebration was the announcement of the fundraising efforts, which surpassed the goal of $100,000. A check was unveiled for $117,572 to be used for scholarships for students in need. The endowment will provide 4-5 scholarships each year for many years to come.

Powell Majors shared the secret to his success at the luncheon by acknowledging five ingredients for a long life – attitude, moderation, exercise, a good wife, and good friends. He also jokingly admitted that the real secret was that he didn’t change wives, banks or churches very often during his 100 years.

”Powell Majors has faithfully served the Charlotte community and given tirelessly as a dedicated public servant for many years,” states Dr. Tony Zeiss, President of CPCC. “We are honored to celebrate his 100th birthday and recognize the tremendous impact he’s had on our College.”

Central Piedmont Community College is the largest community college in North Carolina, offering 100 degree and certification programs, customized corporate training, market-focused continuing education, and special interest classes. CPCC is academically, financially and geographically accessible to all citizens of Mecklenburg County. In 2002, the National Alliance of Business named CPCC the Community College of the Year for its response to the workforce and technology needs of local employers and job seekers through innovative educational and training strategies.
